Holidays and writing

One thing about holidays, they’re a wonderful chance to live eat and breathe your creativity. I love having nothing but writing to work on (if one can call it work). I set a modest daily goal (1000 words a day) and try and get that out of the way in about an hour (remembering the first draft rule – no-one’s going to see it, so it doesn’t matter if it’s rubbish. It can all be edited later).

Occasionally, I get ambitious and try to up my daily target. Turns out, this is a big mistake, because I get locked into the impossibility of it and don’t write anything at all. Days go by, and I won’t have written a thing, but I’ll still be adding up all the words I need to make up, which only makes things worse!

So the moral of the story is, it’s much better to have a modest daily goal and achieve it, than to overextend and wind up in a hole.
